God's Wachdog of the Iwamatsus in Sumon Shrine
Long, long ago, there is a small solitary village in the Tochio district of Niigata Prefecture, Japan. A wolf barked every night during a week in and around the village. So all of the inhabitants ran away in fear of their lives. Last night landslide occurred and the village was completely destroyed, but no one died.
Next morning they came together to the shrine of the Iwamatsus which is only one building not damaged in the village.
One of them cried, "Look! Legs of the wooden God's watchdog get muddy."
"That barking wolf must have been this wooden dog. God sent him to us as His messenger and saved our lives from the disaster.", said the other.
"Oh! Thank God!"
[Note]
This folktale means that you must escape out of your house as soon as possible when you hear the abnormal sounds which is a sign of landslide.
